In 1971 on the Greek island of Naxos a woman from New York City taught me the basics of tapestry weaving. Eventually we both returned to the States, she to NYC, and me to my native Missouri, where I found the rhythms of the four-harness hand loom.
Sounds from shuttles, harnesses, and beater provide an aural backdrop as different yarns glide through my fingers several times in the completion of finished cloth, endearing each piece to me. Through collaboration with expert hand dyers I obtain space-dyed yarns with ever-changing colors that add depth and movement to the finished textiles. The weaving process, in which the weaver responds to the unique personality and voice of individual threads, is an incredible experience, an inspirational relationship I treasure every day. As I liberate fabrics from the loom, I am happy to know they will soon become part of someone else's life as well. I weave what I love, I sell what I can, and then I weave some more.
